INCHEON- On December 19, 2024, South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport fined Delta Air Lines (DL), Korean Air (KE), and Air Astana for breaking the Aviation Business Act.

The decision came after a review by the Administrative Action Review Committee, and the airlines were notified of the results on December 3, 2024, and given the option to voice their views.

The infractions result from occurrences involving operational and reporting deficiencies. On July 23, Korean Air’s flight from Incheon (ICN) to Delhi (DEL) in India had a malfunction that necessitated maintenance.

Passengers were forced to stay in the waiting area for four hours and eight minutes as the plane prepared to depart. This surpassed the four-hour regulatory limit for overseas flights.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport levied a 25 million won ($17,221) fine against Korean Air.

Delta Air Lines was penalized for an incident on August 24, 2024, when a malfunctioning aircraft on the Incheon-Atlanta route delayed passengers on board for four hours and 58 minutes.

Furthermore, the airline failed to publish fares for its new Incheon-Salt Lake City (SLC) route, which is set to start on June 12 next year.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport issued a 35 million won ($24,122) fine on Delta Air Lines.

Air Astana breached the fare reporting requirement by selling tickets on the Incheon-Astana route without properly notifying the ministry. Air Astana was fined ten million won ($6.892).

“We have imposed appropriate disciplinary measures on airlines for violating regulations that could cause inconvenience and harm to air traffic users,” said Kim Yong-guk, the head of aviation policy.
