Despite high unemployment and continued inflation fears, salary increases provide stability for employed persons and suggest larger economic growth.

According to the most recent Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) from StatsSA, average monthly incomes in South Africa have steadily increased. This expansion comes as a great relief to many, particularly in an economic climate that continues difficult for the majority of citizens.

Increase in Average Monthly Salary

The average monthly pay in South Africa increased to R27,450 in June 2024, up from R26,783 in March 2024. This represents a 2.5% gain over the previous quarter, suggesting sustained improvement.

Year over year (May 2023 to May 2024), average earnings increased by 4.8%. Though inflation remains an issue, pay increases are a positive sign for many employed people across the country.

On the other hand, overtime payments increased between March and June 2024. Overtime compensation increased by R1.2 billion (4.2 percent), totaling R28.7 billion.
