AUCKLAND- A security concern involving an Air New Zealand flight to Dunedin (DUD) occurred at Auckland Airport (AKL), possibly caused by a bomb.
Passengers were evacuated, luggage was examined, and operations were halted due to a flight-specific phone call threat. While no threat was discovered, the incident underscored the necessity of aviation safety protocols.
Air New Zealand Security Threat
An Air New Zealand (NZ) Airbus A320 scheduled for flight NZ677 from Auckland to Dunedin was delayed after receiving a security threat via phone.
The incident occurred just before the flight’s planned departure at 5:40 PM. After receiving the threat, the airplane returned to the gate, and passengers were routed to a safe location while authorities searched the plane and luggage thoroughly.
Specialist teams discovered no signs of a bomb or other hazards onboard. Passengers originally waited on the plane before being taken off row by row to ensure a smooth and safe evacuation.
David Morgan, the airline’s operational integrity and safety officer, underscored that passenger safety always comes first, even in the face of inconvenience.
While Air New Zealand workers worked hard to alleviate discomfort, several passengers were dissatisfied.
A Dunedin guy described the mood as “distressing,” with some passengers expecting the worst, such as a bomb warning. The Otago Daily Times stated that passengers had been congregated in a terminal lounge for hours without receiving adequate updates.
Although food was ultimately served, including snacks and sandwiches, some passengers claimed long waits with insufficient sustenance. Others, notably families with young children, found the situation difficult but commended the airline’s attempts to handle the unforeseen incident.
Passenger Helen Cannan stated that the overall experience was “largely positive,” praising Air New Zealand’s crew for their efforts.
She emphasized the availability of food and drink, and recognized that some parents went to local stores to buy extra supplies for their children.
Airline Response to the Situation
Air New Zealand assisted customers by arranging hotel rooms and rebooking flights when needed. The airline also followed up with passengers following the incident to assure their safety.
Police said that their investigation into the threat is ongoing, but stated that all routine security processes were followed to assure passenger safety.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Air New Zealand’s work with law enforcement shows a dedication to safety and effective threat management.

Previously, a bomb threat was detected aboard Air New Zealand Flight NZ247 from Wellington (WLG) to Sydney (SYD) on October 19, 2024. The aircraft, which carried 154 passengers and crew, landed safely at 5:40 p.m. local time and was guided to a utility taxiway distant from the terminals.
Emergency responders, including bomb squads, paramedics, and armed police, arrived quickly, with approximately 40 cars on the scene. The airplane stayed isolated for more than an hour before traveling to the international terminal under Federal Police surveillance.
Air New Zealand acknowledged its participation with local authorities, citing standard security processes. The tragedy demonstrated the significance of strong aviation safety standards.
