SAS to launch SpaceX Starlink WiFi by the end of 2025

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has announced a game-changing partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink to provide free, high-speed internet across its entire fleet. This collaboration marks a major milestone in aviation technology, ensuring passengers enjoy seamless connectivity throughout their journey. The rollout is set to begin in late 2025, offering an unmatched in-flight internet experience.

Revolutionizing In-Flight Connectivity with Starlink

SpaceX’s Starlink network, which operates through low Earth orbit satellites, promises uninterrupted internet service even in remote regions. Unlike traditional satellite systems, which often struggle in challenging areas like the North Pole, Atlantic Ocean, and North Sea, Starlink ensures reliable connectivity throughout the flight.

This new service will be available to all passengers at no extra cost, making SAS one of the first major airlines to integrate fleet-wide Starlink connectivity. EuroBonus members will automatically receive access as part of their membership benefits.

Paul Verhagen, SAS’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlights the impact of this innovation, stating,
“We’re connecting our passengers to the world like never before. This advancement eliminates connectivity disruptions and sets a new standard for in-flight internet service.”

Gate-to-Gate Wi-Fi: A Seamless Digital Experience

Unlike conventional in-flight Wi-Fi, which only operates at cruising altitude, SAS is introducing gate-to-gate connectivity. This means passengers will have access to high-speed internet from the moment they board until they disembark.

Jason Fritch, SpaceX Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales, emphasizes Starlink’s capability to provide “home-equivalent” internet speeds even over remote locations. This ensures uninterrupted business operations, streaming, and communication during flights.

The advanced Starlink aero terminals used in this system are also designed to minimize drag, reducing fuel consumption and aligning with SAS’s sustainability goals.

Key features of SAS’s new Wi-Fi service include:

  • High-speed, low-latency connectivity
  • Coverage in remote regions like the North Pole and Atlantic Ocean
  • Simultaneous multi-device support for passengers
  • Seamless switching between smartphones, tablets, and laptops

SAS aims to launch this service across its entire fleet starting in late 2025, setting a new benchmark for in-flight connectivity.

SAS Expands Domestic Routes in Sweden

In addition to its groundbreaking internet upgrade, SAS has also introduced new domestic routes to strengthen Sweden’s air connectivity. Effective January 27, 2025, SAS now operates flights between Stockholm Arlanda Airport and both Halmstad City Airport and Kalmar Öland Airport.

Strengthening Sweden’s Air Network

These new routes enhance travel accessibility within Sweden, supporting both business and leisure travelers. Stockholm Arlanda, the main hub, facilitates convenient connections to domestic and international destinations.

Edward Fotheringham, SAS Vice President of Global Sales, underscores the significance of these routes:
“The launch of Halmstad and Kalmar operations strengthens Sweden’s travel infrastructure, boosting economic growth across sectors.”

Halmstad: A Hub for Business and Culture

Halmstad, a key business center in southwestern Sweden, is known for its coastal attractions and cultural amenities. Governor Anders Thornberg highlights the importance of the new air route, saying,
“The Halmstad-Stockholm connection strengthens Sweden’s infrastructure, benefiting businesses, government operations, and defense preparedness.”

Kalmar: Economic Growth and Tourism

Kalmar, home to a mix of innovative startups and established businesses, is also a popular tourist destination. The city offers historical attractions and natural landscapes, particularly on Öland Island.

Ronny Lindberg, CEO of Kalmar Öland Airport, emphasizes the economic impact of SAS’s new route:
“SAS’s hub operation through Arlanda creates vital growth opportunities for our region, requiring active engagement from all stakeholders.”

Future Growth and Expansion

SAS’s 2025 domestic network expansion includes:

  • New routes to Halmstad, Kalmar, and Sälen
  • Increased flight frequencies on existing routes
  • Collaboration with Braathens Airways AB (BRA) for enhanced connectivity

These expansions further solidify SAS’s commitment to improving Sweden’s domestic air network.

SAS’s partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink is a groundbreaking step toward revolutionizing in-flight connectivity. By offering high-speed, low-latency Wi-Fi to all passengers for free, SAS is setting new industry standards. Additionally, the introduction of new domestic routes enhances Sweden’s air travel infrastructure, benefiting both business and leisure travelers. With these advancements, SAS continues to position itself as a leader in aviation technology and connectivity.
