TANGERANG- AirAsia Indonesia (QZ), a major low-cost carrier, wants to expand its network by launching six additional routes in 2025.

The Tangerang-based airline will add five aircraft to its fleet, bringing the total number of planes to 30.

AirAsia Indonesia New Routes

Veranita Yosephine Sinaga, President Director, disclosed these intentions during a Ramp Check at Soekarno-Hatta Airport’s Terminal 2F on December 27, 2024. Tempo claimed that the airline now has five aircraft in maintenance that will be returned to active operations.

The new flights will service both domestic and international markets, however the particular destinations are unknown. Sinaga highlights the airline’s commitment to handling the current busy season before confirming the additional route details.

The expansion builds on AirAsia Indonesia’s 2024 development, which included the opening of five international routes connecting Jakarta to Kota Kinabalu and Bandar Seri Begawan, as well as Bali to Cairns, Kota Kinabalu, and Phuket. The airline recently began offering domestic service between Bandar Lampung and Bali.

AirAsia Indonesia’s current network includes 32 routes, including eight domestic and 24 overseas destinations. The airline runs 399 weekly flights across its network, representing a significant increase in operational capacity.

Operational Hurdles

AirAsia Indonesia fell short of its 2024 flight targets due to a shortage of aircraft spare parts. President Director Veranita Yosephine Sinaga cites worldwide supply chain problems caused by the COVID-19 outbreak as the primary culprit.

The aviation sector is already seeing tremendous competition for spare parts as airlines worldwide rush to restore their fleets to full capacity. This supply deficit has had a direct impact on AirAsia’s ability to maintain its planned flight schedules.

According to Airnav Indonesia data, AirAsia has the highest international flight frequency among Indonesian airlines while operating the fewest domestic flights in 2024. Despite these hurdles, Sinaga remains optimistic about increasing domestic routes by 2025.

The projected domestic network expansion is consistent with AirAsia’s goal of boosting Indonesia’s tourism industry and contributing to national economic development.
